Wild Thing

Posted by Ian on January 23, 2008

In the spirit of continuing my chord based riffs that I started with Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes, here’s the riff for ‘Wild Thing’.

It works quite nicely on the uke.

Muting

Posted by Ian on January 23, 2008

There are many different types of muting when dealing with instruments. From palm muting on a guitar or bass to putting a mute on a cello or viola to pressing down the mute pedal on a piano, to ‘muting’ the strings on a ukulele after you strum them.

I’ll be teaching you about the latter.

When strumming a ukulele, it is always nice to add variety to your strums… whether merely in the pattern of your strumming or something more fun like a roll. Another thing you can do to add variety to your sound is muting the strings after you strum them. Essentially, what you do is simply strum the strings then set your palm across the strings to stop them from vibrating. The only problem that may arise from only doing this is that you may end up with somewhat of a percussive slap from hitting the front of your uke. You can solve this by strumming in a somewhat unconventional way… drawing your thumb across the strings with your palm hovering over the strings. This way, when you slap your hand down, it doesn’t make as much of a ‘thump’.

Checking In…

Posted by Ian on January 22, 2008

Haven’t had the time to tab anything out to post today, but I want to at least get a post up….

…so I’ll ask this:  what do y’all want to see on this site: More tabs? More regular updates?

…I’m assuming there’s a y’all that I’m talking to… that I’m not just aimlessly talking to nothingness….

Remember: you can now leave comments…. just telling you….

And now I’m off to bed. G’nite.

Server transfer!

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

I have decided to switch over to wordpress, as opposed to coding my own blog…. it looks better, has more features, and allows me to have more time to actually write up the info for the blog.

I’ve re-posted all of my old posts from the old blog, and will soon be adding new info to this site.

…and the best part of it…. you all can leave comments! I can finally get input and see what all you guys want.

Owner

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

These next few days I”m going to try to put up some music by Yes that I’ve tabbed out… between ole’ Rick’s keyboard work and Steve’s guitar playing… and maybe Jon’s vocals, sometimes, I’ve got a good amount of their stuff that’s either tabbed, being tabbed, or in need of being tabbed out. To start things off, here’s what is most likely their most recognizable riff… the main chords from Owner of a Lonely Heart

Eleuke

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

The EleUke came in friday… it’s currently sunday morning, and I’ve probably logged a good (unhealthy?) 7 or 8 hours on the thing so far. Yes, it’s that addicting (as if the ukulele already wasn’t addicting enough). The model I bought was the TCH-100 PHS… something like that…. Anyhow, it has a beautiful sound… sounds almost as nice as my koa when hooked up to an amp and put on a nice ‘clean’ signal. Of course, it’s when you start playing with the sound that things get fun…. with enough stompboxes… or a digital effect box, you can make as many sounds come out of it as you can an electric guitar…. except it’s a ukulele, making it at least ten times better than an electric guitar. It has great volume, considering that it’s a pezio pickup with nylon strings, as opposed to stell strings, as some electric ukuleles use. Its built in headphone jack comes in handy for silent practice, too….

It was well worth my 200 dollars.

Demented Russian Clowns….

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

I’ve decided to take a shot at composing for the ukulele… I’ve done other composing in the past (namely cello) and thought it was about time to do it for what has become my favourite instrument. Here’s a Prelude to a ‘suite’ I’m attempting to compose…. along with a midi file to go wih it (please note: the midi file does not take repeats, etc.)

This is when that comment system would come in handy… I could get feedback from you all…. oh well. In time….

Stuff, Again

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

So… I recently bought a bugsgear electric ukulele (EleUke) off of ebay…. as soon as I get it, I will post some sort of review on it… hopefully it’s as good as I’ve heard it is. Actually, let me take that back. It won’t be as soon as I get it… that’d require me to put it down soon after I get it. THe review might come up a while after I get the uke….

In other news, my friend who is working on the comment system is apperantly in the process of throwing it together, so, possibly within the next week or so, you’ll be able to post your feedback and whatnot after my posts….

Coke…

Posted by Ian on January 21, 2008

Here’s a new tab for you all… the old Coca Cola jingle… “I’d like to teach the world to sing… etc, etc.” I think they parodied something else to make it, but I have no clue what that song is called….. Anyhow, the tow two strings take the melody, and the bottom two are a simple improvised harmony to make it sound fuller. Have fun doing what you wish with it….

In other news, I have asked a friend of mine to set up a PHP comment system for this site, which will be nice. He should have it done… sometime. So that’ll be neat… I can get y’all’s opinions and whatnot…
